Embracing the Change

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”

– Alan Watts

This September my world changed a little bit: I joined the gluten-free crowd. Funnily enough, it was on advice of a new dentist I visited while my usual doctor was away. There was a great deal of denial in the first few hours after her announcement but then everything kind of made perfect sense and I fully embraced the new way of eating. Amazing things started happening almost immediately – my energy levels went through the roof; everything felt somehow clearer and easier as if a fog has lifted from my mind; I found myself being in a super cheerful mood much more often. But the most surprising feeling that I experienced in the first few weeks of being off wheat was my desire to create constantly, as if my muse was just circling around me non-stop demanding some action.  So I have been photographing, writing, reading and making plans for future projects. Art supply shops draw me in like there is one big magnet in there. I did buy a new tube of paint – a lovely pastel coral –  and I am hoping to get my brushes out very soon. Ohhhh, never enough hours in one day!

This whole wellbeing exercise proved once again how all our systems are connected. How one small change in your diet can trigger the most unexpected beautiful new developments.

I also have been baking up a storm. Not that I had been a regular baker before, but I feel like I’ve been trying to prove to myself and everyone around that you can live very easily without many things that we are so used to. Plus the idea of not being able to have a wheat-bran muffin probably ever in my life again got me researching my options, and they are turned out to be absolutely unlimited. I am seriously blown away by the number of people who live gluten-free life all around the world, also super grateful to gorgeous bloggers who share their recipes with the world, and feeling blessed that I can have access to so many gluten-free alternatives in my local supermarket.

So here we go, one of my new favourites – my take on Raising Bran Muffins from The Baking Beauties blog. I might be addicted already.

So first of all, I want to say that this recipe calls for hemp seeds. That are illegal in Australia and New Zealand ONLY and are available everywhere else. Go figure. Was thinking of buying them online but then decided that I did not want to be a convicted smuggler, so I now add a couple of teaspoons of chia seeds instead. I also haven’t been able to get my hands on rice bran so I use quinoa flakes from the health food section at Coles. I also put less sugar – around a third of a cup only, and I use raw organic sugar. You can buy flax seed anywhere, just make sure you keep it in the fridge once the pack is opened.

Love my little kitchen helper – the iPad!

A sidenote: taking pictures with one hand using back button focusing and pouring seeds into a tiny grinder with another hand will result in some serious vacuuming. But I find the look of the seeds spilled all around the kitchen bench rather arty:)Plus they smell like an oil painting and bring back the sweet memories of my Art School days.

I also improvised and added some pecans together with the raisins – the more goodness the tastier the muffins.

Ta-daaa!!!

Mmmm, they are amazing when warm, and disappear fast. I also needed to have a few takes so you can imagine…

So here is to the exciting new recipes, the goodness of home-made muffins, and the limitless life!

Have a beautiful October everyone.

Bunny, Friend, and a Lovely Carrot

Once upon a time on a warm sunny afternoon one very happy Bunny was skipping through the open fields.

Suddenly, The Bunny noticed something bright sticking out of the ground! “Ohhh what can it be?” thought The Bunny…

“Ohhh it’s a carrot! How nice it is of this carrot to wait for me here! I love carrots! They are orange and crunchy!”

And The Bunny happily picked it up, smiled, and prepared to do some serious munching when a thought crossed The Bunny’s mind…

“Hmmm, I bet this carrot will taste even sweeter if I share it with someone who loves carrots as much as I do! I need to find a friend because friends make everything more fun!”

And so The Bunny started looking for a friend…
The Bunny was hoping The Birdie would like to share the carrot. “Birdie, Birdie,” called The Bunny. But there was no reply…

“Probably The Birdy is busy today…” thought The Bunny.

“What to do, what to do…” thought The Bunny and held on tight to the lovely vegetable. “I am very hungry because of this fresh air, but I can’t have the carrot all to myself as I will not taste as sweet as it can when you share it with a friend…”

But then a big smile appeared on Bunny’s little face! Because The Bunny suddenly saw someone who looked very familiar…

So The Bunny cheerfully hopped across the soft grassy field, carrot in hand.

But that someone was curled up in a little fluffy ball, having an afternoon nap. “Wake up, wake up!” called The Bunny. “Look what I found!”

And The Friend woke up, and The Bunny gave him the biggest hug possible! Because now they can share the carrot and play together and be happy.

They chomped on the lovely carrot and hopped in the grass until the sunset.

But then The Bunny had to go home because it was bunnies’ bedtime, and Mummy was already waiting at their cozy little burrow.

“Good Night, Friend!” turned and called The Bunny. “Let’s look for more carrots tomorrow!”

And The Friend smiled and said: “Yes, because everything is more fun when you do it together!”

The End.

It Takes Time to See

“In a way nobody sees a flower really, it is so small, we haven’t the time – and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time”

– Georgiea O’Keeffe

I got an email this morning, a regular subscription email from an extraordinary woman – Susannah Conway.  There was a beautiful gift inside – the “Exploring the Senses” e-book. The quote above is from there, and what struck me most  while slowly working through the book were the moments of serendipity that I experienced almost on every other page. My favourite movies mentioned, familiar emotions described, my well hidden dreams shining right there on the page, as if the words were written for me… And then there was this quote by Georgia O’Keeffe, a tidbit of life philosophy that is so close to my heart, that tells us to stop often. To see. To observe. To feel. To live a little bit more mindfully. To make sure that you get low on the ground, curbside,  to capture that ray of low sun kissing the little clover flower. You will know then that the spring is here.

So yes, the spring is here! It is warmer, it is lighter (it really feels strange when I drive to my yoga class at 5.30 in the morning – it is too bright for that time of the day!), it is generally lovelier. Plus the weather is perfect for green smoothies, and I am now officially addicted to kale and spinach.

Have a beautiful spring everyone.

Effervescence

‘Love of man for woman – love of woman for man.

That’s the nature, the meaning, the best of life itself”

– Zane Grey

It was a sparkling, glorious, quintessentially Sydney day.

A calm but still slightly nervous, and very handsome groom was waiting for the love of his life at the altar, surrounded by his dearest. His beautiful bride entered the church, her hand held tenderly by her father.

The vows were said, the happy tears were shed.  And then there was joy, pure joy, as the new husband and wife walked along the aisle towards the bright Australian sunshine, hand in hand.

At sunset Sydney Harbour bathed the newlyweds with its shimmering golden light. Effervescent.  And it was only the beginning of everything.

I had an absolute pleasure of helping my dear friend Richard Alma at this wedding. The day started with a ceremony at St Mark’s church in Darling Point, and the reception was held at Club Rose Bay.
